Several years ago a client of ours was calling angrily about his lightning damage. He had spent money to install a surge protector and battery backup for his office but was still on the hook for tens of thousands after a bolt of lightning coursed through his workspace, cooking his computers and printers. Turns out he had connected a new scanner directly to the wall without going through the surge protectors or battery backup, and then plugged the scanner into his main production computer. The bolt followed the unprotected power plug and then up the USB cord into the production machine, cooking it utterly. If one device is surge protected, ALL devices must be surge protected for safeties sake.
